What characterizations of Bilbo and the dwarfs based on this chapter?
The dwarfs are afraid to go into the tunnel and Thorin gets mad at Bilbo so he sends him into the cave first.

What motivates Bilbo to steal the cup?
The elves motivate him by telling him about the cup, and how no words could describe it, so when he first saw the cup he was out of words to say.

What techniques does Tolkien use to characterize Smuag?
He was a fast red-golden dragon and he had really big jaws he also had a long tail and he slept on jewels and jems in the cave.

Explain how Bilbo tries to trick Smaug and how smaug tries to imfluence Bilbo?
Smaug was following Bilbo out of the cave breathing fire and Thorin said to go get the ponies and when the dragon couldnt get Bilbo or the dwarfs the ponies got scared and they ran away and smaug followed them.

What mistakes does Bilbo make in dealing with Smaug, in your opinion?
I think Bilbo should have been more quiet and that way he would of taken the cup without Smaug trying to kill him and waking up.

What effect does the hoard of gold have on the various characters?
I think the Hoard of gold was decribed as this beautiful treasure, and everyone wants to get it.
