1) Write characterizations of Bilbo and the dwarves based on this chapter.
In this chapter Bilbo was brave because he went to the tunnel to see the Smaug.but the dwarves were ask Bilbo to do go see smaug and steal there treasure, Dwarves were afraid.
2)What motivates Bilbo to steal the cup?
The reason he wants to stole the cup was it was beautiful, and It belongs to Dwarves part there treasure.
3)What techniques does Tolkien use to characterize Smaug?
The author use the word that describe the Smaug. like huge, and red golden dragon, his Jaws and nostrils, and wisps of smoke, but his fires were low in Slumber.
4) Explain how Bilbo tries to trick Smaug and how Smaug tries to influence Bilbo. Is either successful? Explain. Include a clarification of Bilbo's riddle-talk.
Bilbo was trying to talk nicely and tell Smaug that Bilbo was came here that giant, awesome Dragon exist or not. He was trying to make dragon's feel good. Smaug was feel good about it but when Bilbo keep talking about the other thing Smaug knew that Bilbo was trying to do something and then Bilbo's Riddle-talk failed.
5) What mistakes does Bilbo make in dealing with Smaug in your opinion?
I think Bilbo should be friend with Dragon so Dragon won't hurt him or eat him. or be close so Dragon respect Bilbo. But Bilbo just tell dragon few nice thing that's why the Riddle-talk failed.
6) What effect does the hoard of gold have on the various character?
The hoard of gold means to Dwarves and Bilbo was there money. That gold can make them rich and wealthy. It is important to them. and to Bilbo is the thing that he have to steal from the dragon and give back to Drwarves.
